The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister is part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, an alliance of fourteen museums in Dresden, Leipzig and Herrnhut. The origins of the Gemäldegalerie can be traced back to the Kunstkammer (‘art chamber‘) of the Electors of Saxony, which was founded in the mid-16th century.
