App Store Description

Location Update is an app that lets your iPhone periodically report your location to a web server. The web server then decides what to do with that information. One use might be to save your location so that other users can go to a web page hosted on the web server and display a map with your location. Anyone who can create a web site can have this app connect to it.
The app can report the "normal" information you get from a GPS such a your latitude and longitude. It can also report your altitude, speed and heading if you wish. A key concept with this app is that you are in control of what is reported and whe your location is reported. You can also just turn off all reporting.
A goal of the app is to minimize battery consumption. This is accomplished by turning on the GPS for just a little while, taking a reading, then turning off the GPS and reporting to your web site. The app also stops taking readings when you are indoors, and it will stop taking readings if your battery gets below 20%. The app can run in the background so it works even when you're screen is turned off.

That said, you should be aware that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Possible uses are hobbyist/makers who want to track the location of people or objects, a family that want to know where everyone is and uses their Linux server at their house to host the web site, parents who want to know where their child is when they are on a field trip, organizations that want to know where their people are. Note that in all these cases, everyone has to be "on-board" with being tracked and anyone can turn off tracking on their phones.
Note that this is only the mobile side, there is no services or web based side. You must write your own web based page to accept position reports from this app and then display information to users. If this doesn’t make sense to you, don’t buy the app.

Key features that the user can set up to control how and when your position is reported are:
- You can set the report interval from 5 seconds to 10 minutes. The longer the period, the less the battery drain.
- You can specify that the app can run in the background when the phone’s screen is off, another battery saving option.
- You can control what aspects of your position are reported.
- The app stops using the GPS and reporting when your battery gets down to 20%.
- The Position Display screen shows your current GPS information, and has indicators to show if everything is working OK
