This app brings the QRISK®2-2014 cardiovascular disease risk calculator to the iPhone. It has been written by ClinRisk Ltd who provide the reference standard implementation of QRISK®2 in use across the UK National Health Service.
You can use this calculator to work out your risk of having a heart attack or stroke over the next ten years by answering some simple questions. It is suitable for people who do not already have a diagnosis of heart disease or stroke.
Whilst QRISK®2 has been developed for use in the UK, it is being used internationally. The UK version uses postcodes to map deprivation data for the algorithm. This international version allows you to interactively change the amount of deprivation with a slider. Simply press on the "Score" tab to reset the deprivation to a neutral value, neither rich nor poor.
The QRISK®2 algorithm has been developed by doctors and academics working in the UK National Health Service and is based on routinely collected data from many thousands of GPs across the country who have freely contributed data the QResearch database for medical research. It is updated annually each April, refitted to the latest data to remain as accurate as possible.
The academic paper describing the risk score is in the British Medical Journal, BMJ 2008;336:1475-82, and an independent validation of the score is published later in the same journal, BMJ 2010;340:c2442. Links to both these papers can be found on the qrisk.org website.
