The Race With Maps (RWM) App uses a race course designed in Google MyMaps

Race With Maps

by Jane Brown

What is it about?

The Race With Maps (RWM) App uses a race course designed in Google MyMaps. Design the course yourself or use one from a friend! For example, how about a 5K race around your vacation beach town or just around your neighborhood. Design it in Google My Maps (or copy your friends), download it, then during your run, as you encounters the MyMaps Markers on the your course, Race With Maps makes audio announcements using your content from the MyMaps Markers. For example, during a virtual race, when the runner arrives near a turn they might hear “take a left at the stop sign and run on the sidewalk”. Arriving at Waypoints, crossing Lines, going over an Area boundary all cause RWM to fire the audio announcement associated with the Marker. And RWM can compute and insert race time, race distance, pace and deviation from a time goal into an announcement. As example of a pace insertion announcement the runner might hear “Your pace over the last mile was 10 minutes per mile”. A Start Line can automatically starts the race while a Finish Line can automatically stops the race. This allows a runner to author a race course in MyMaps with race progress updates, directions, points of interest, fueling/hydration reminders and more. And since RWM uses .kml files, these Projects can be shared with others. Runners can preview their Project running experience by using the RWM simulator. RWM is a regular running App if the user chooses to not use a my MyMap Project. See the website intervalrunner.com for user guides and examples
