App Store Description

Welcome to Redwood, the world’s 1st augmented reality K-5 math adventure game!

Thank you for being here. We hope this app proves to be a fun and effective learning tool. Redwood was founded by two college undergrads dead-set on finding a more engaging and intuitive way to learn. We believe augmented reality technology has tremendous potential to do just that. Please take into account that this version is very much a work in progress, and we are calling on our community to give us feedback and help us build a tool that can truly excite and engage young learners. Please reach out to redwood@virginia.edu with any feedback, suggestions, questions, comments, or concerns.

This version of Redwood Features:
• 1 quest in each of the 9 regions of the world map
• A basic pattern recognition game
• An in-game currency system consisting of Hydros and Lavas
• An inventory of unlockable 3D models

How to Play Redwood
• Setting Up: Find a large, flat surface to play Redwood on.
• Playing outdoors is ideal - no internet connection is currently needed to play Redwood!
• Hydros: By answering questions correctly, you earn Hydros. Hydros are the main currency of Redwood.
• Lavas: Lavas were created to space out the math learning! You get +1 Lava every 24 hours, so be sure to check in regularly to get the most out of Redwood.
• Adventure Mode: Tap the World Map button to play across 9 different worlds of math quests. Regions are available to unlock after you complete the previous region
• Pattern Mode: Tap the blue cube to play a fun pattern recognition game and earn Hydros!
• Inventory: This is where your unlocked items are stored! Purchase them using Hydros and Lavas to see what they’re about.
• If 3D models go missing on the screen, closing the app and reopening it should fix the problem.

Why Redwood?

Redwood was built alongside parents seeking more engaging learning experiences for their students. While we regrettably do not have a parent portal feature yet, the Redwood team is working hard to make our product as family friendly as possible. If you have any thoughts on what that may look like, please reach out to redwood@virginia.edu.

From our inception in October 2020, Redwood has been committed to building a product that is both fun and pedagogically superior to traditional methods. Augmented reality has the potential to do both of these things. Not only is augmented reality engaging technology, but it also has the potential to teach three-dimensional concepts in a more intuitive way. Mathematics is fundamentally rooted in spatial awareness, spatial reasoning, and pattern recognition; these concepts can be learned more intuitively in augmented reality than they can using traditional two-dimensional methods.

We hope you enjoy Redwood AR!
