How healthy is your stream? SHMAK - the New Zealand Stream Health Monitoring and Assessment Kit – helps you find out. It enables non-scientists to collect consistent, scientifically valid information from streams and make assessments of stream health.
The SHMAK That Bug app includes a guide to help identify different groups of freshwater invertebrates. After you have identified and counted them, use the inbuilt calculator to find out your score. The app also connects to NatureWatch NZ, an online community of naturalists and biodiversity experts, where you can upload photos and get help on identifications.
