Simplifying Expressions

Simplifying expressions are the building blocks of algebra and a good grasp of the concepts are required to effectively understand algebra. Without this understanding, algebra would be difficult and much of mathematics and even science would be very difficult. The app has been designed to introduce students to these fundamentals to gain an understanding of these concepts. It begins with explanations of the important terminology that is used in examinations. The introduction gives an overview of what algebra is and provides definitions of what terms and expressions are.

After the introduction, the app begins with some simple examples typically what would be seen in a foundation examination paper at secondary or high school. The examples become progressively more challenging leading to what would be available on higher examination papers. Eventually, problem solving questions will be addressed, a source of difficulty amongst many students, involving simplifying expressions. The examples will show, in a stepwise
fashion, the full method and solution and the use of colours help to distinguish between the different steps. I find that my own students find this approach very useful and it helps them understand each part of the question.

Also included are a set of exercises in the form of multiple choice questions. The student can choose the level of difficulty of the questions by choosing foundation or higher prior to starting the exercises. A student may wish to begin with foundation if the student is not confident. Once an understanding is achieved, the student may then wish to try more challenging questions in the higher tier. The questions are comparable to current examination questions found at secondary or high school. Some questions have also been adapted to preempt what could be asked in future examinations.

This app does not require an internet connection. So if you have limited data on your devices or no data at all, then this has no effect on the functionality of the app.
