Swaad is our passion and we passionately welcome you in our restaurant with unmatched taste and variety. We use fresh vegetables from the region, our meat comes from Berns oldest butscher shop (Spahni AG), herbs and spices from Pakistan and India, tea from Himalaya region and long grain basmati rice from the fields of Punjab and pink Himalaya Salt from the world’s biggest salt mine in Pothohar range of Pakistan.
Indian Cuisine
Indian cuisine consists of a variety of regional and traditional cuisines native to the Indian subcontinent. Given the diversity in soil, climate, culture, ethnic groups, and occupations these cuisines vary substantially and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Indian food is also heavily influenced by religion, cultural choices and traditions. Centuries of Islamic rule, particularly by the Mughals, also introduced dishes like samosa and pilaf.
2. Our Mission and who we are
Swaad is an Indian sub continental restaurant serving Pakistani, Kashmiri, Indian and Mughalei food along with some local delicacies from the cuisine of Punjab, a very healthy cuisine.
We believe in serving Indian sub continental recipes made simply with freshly prepared house blend of spices. All our spices are sourced from local spice (Pakistani & Indian) farmers and we love to support them through, to strive environmental harmony and in return they enhance spices of delicious flavors.
Himalaya Salt:
At Swaad we cook with Himalaya salt which makes the taste unmatched. Pink Himalayan salt comes from seabed and although commonly referred to as a spice, this product is actually a mineral. It is a natural, very coarse-grained salt and contains many minerals.
Basmati Rice
Basmati rice is one of the most widely used ingredients in many cuisines around the world. Its unique taste and aroma are the driving force behind its worldwide popularity and success. When cooked properly, the taste of basmati rice will satisfy your taste buds.
Spices
All spices, used in our restaurant, are authentic Pakistani /Indian spices or their mixtures. Some of them are supplied directly from Pakistan/India. We carefully combine spices with other ingredients, in order they not only would be consistent with each other, but also have the most positive impact on your health. These spices are not only delicious, but also very flavorful, so start tasting our dishes with nose – you will smell the diversity of flavors in our soups and stews, and then taste them. You will see, once tried, you could not stop.
Turmeric
Having an earthy odor, turmeric has a pungent flavor. It has a little bitter, peppery like mustard and a slight ginger flavor in it. Turmeric is used for cooking and also as a coloring agent. An Indian spicy recipe without turmeric may not have the desired flavor of the dish. In India, it is commonly called as Haldi.
Phool Makhana (Lotus seeds)
Makhanas are also known as fox nuts, Euryale ferox, lotus seeds, gorgon nuts and phool makhana. At Swaad we use makhanas in raita, curry, breads and can be eaten as tea snack or starter.
Tofu Cheese
Tofu is also known as bean curd or soya curd, tofu is a soft cheese made from soy, which is a great source of proteins, while at the same time it contains almost no fat and carbohydrates. Tofu cheese is a great choice for vegetarians, vegans, or people, following a healthy diet. By the way, this product contains plenty of calcium, so you will be happy of healthy teeth and bones.
Meat Products
Our meat products are very high quality, which we get from Spahni AG, this is one of the oldest butcher shop established in 1863 in Ostermundigen, Bern.
