Considering the air leakage rate in the duct works during the design stage is very critical, since it might reduce the performance of the cooling or heating system due to the reduction of the amount of air flow at the point (occupancy area), this can lead to a loss in the occupants’ comfort level, reducing productivity and increasing labor costs…. To overcome the loss in the occupants’ comfort level sometimes operators will tend to increase the fan speed to achieve the desired air flow at the air outlets, this will increase the running cost of the HVAC system & will decrease the life time of the HVAC equipment... there for a lot of standards, codes, & international references (such as DW/143, SMACNA, ASHRAE….etc.) made different criteria to determine the maximum allowable air leakage rates in the duct works...
