Boats were towed upstream by hand on towpaths until the industrial revolution happened in the 19th century.
The invention of the steam engine has been a milestone in the technical evolution but also brought the negative.
Rivers were further on polluted by the industry and heavy traffic on the water.
Citys along rivers have grown into metropolitan areas and economical centers.
