Walkie Talkie Dream Angles

“walkie-talkie dream angles” is an interactive composition created by Dafna Naphtali, whose aim is to draw attention to issues surrounding urban noise pollution. Originally created for the 2016 NoiseGate Festival (20-25 September), the piece was constructed and realized with U-GRUVE AR, an Audio Augmented Reality system for mobile devices created by Richard Rodkin and Memetic Arts, Inc. (also available on the App Store).

The piece functions as a soundwalk from Washington Square Park, with forays into sonically interesting spaces that underscore the loss of quiet in this part of the city where Ms. Naphtali has worked for many years.

“walkie-talkie dream angles” brings one of Ms. Naphtali's favorite urban environments to musical life and presents it in a unique and individual way. With pre-recorded environmental sounds from the area, she processes and layers these sounds with her voice, and uses some thoughtful strategizing about site-specific listening, interactivity and attention span.
