Dev Team Speaks: Member pytey on TUAW

July 15, 2008
Dev Team member pytey was on The Unofficial Apple Weblog just moments ago taking questions from Erica Sadun and viewers. Notable revelations by pytey during the web-interview includes:
  • actual unlocking isn't possible (yet), but is being worked on
  • 1st generation iPhones updated with 2.0 firmware can jailbreak using PwnageTool 2.0
  • PwnageTool 2.0 will be super-easy to use (even your grandma can do it!)
  • you will be able to execute 'your own code' (unsigned) with PwnageTool 2.0
  • Mac version of PwnageTool 2.0 will release first, though a Windows version is in the works
  • will allow you to bypass activation completely
  • release is extremely imminent
  • old apps need to be "fixed and recompiled" for 2.0 compatibility
Excerpts from the web-interview are below:
10:29 pytey - Well, jailbreaking is the first step to an unlock. PwnageTool doesn't unlock 3G devices (yet). 10:30 pytey - So the answer is no on that front. But our boffins are working on it. 10:33 pytey - [PwnageTool 2.0] will be simple as can be. We've listened to users and made the application Granny proof. So you need to buy your Grannies iPhones... 10:34 pytey - Yes, PwnageTool 2.0 unlocks 1st gen. phone. 10:43 ericasadun - Lots of readers want to know about that picture 10:43 ericasadun - http://www.ihazsupper.com/ 10:43 pytey - Oh, that is cool, [BOOKMARKED] I'll check it out later 10:44 [Comment From paloooz] - Can we execute unsigned code? 10:44 pytey - palooz: you can execute your own code, put it that way. 10:44 [Comment From Thomas] - Will there be an unlock for Windows users? 10:47 pytey - There is a cross platform tool being worked on, but the immediate release is the Mac version. 10:49 pytey - We don't accept donations and the tool will be free. No drama, no $$, safe code. 10:51 pytey - Just donate to your charity as you would usually. The team members are from all countries around the world, so we don't have a specific charity that we promote. 10:53 [Comment From maze] - do you bypass activation? 10:53 pytey - Yes :) 10:55 [Comment From naero] - do you feel pressure to release pwnagetool 2.0 before yiphone? do you think it even exists? 10:56 pytey - Geohot is a great hacker, hacking isn't only about computers, it is about mischief and other fun things. He likes these things too. :) 10:56 pytey - We'll see what happens. 10:58 pytey - ...we do this for fun. It is a hobby. Most of us work in the tech industry and get paid well, this helps us "unwind" 10:58 ericasadun - Several readers have asked: What is your relationship with the Woz? 11:00 pytey - I notice he was sat at the top of the table in that painting. Don't you get it? He was _the_ original Apple hacker, you can't get much higher than that. He is nothing to do with us, we just think he is awesome. I don't like his watch much though. 11:01 ericasadun - Do you expect a public jailbreak release within, say, the next two weeks? 11:02 pytey - Watch this space! ;) Lets just say we are warming up the Bittorrent trackers. 11:05 [Comment From Jeff] - Will the initial hack install SSH? 11:06 pytey - SSH can be installed using installer.app or cydia. 11:07 ericasadun - How will the 2.0 framework changes (there are significant ones! these are the library that power the iPhone) affect Installer.app? Will old applications still work? 11:08 pytey - Applications will need to be fixed and recompiled, there are loads of fantastic apps that didn't make it into the AppStore, so these will be offered by installer.app and cydia. Great apps are being prepared to be distributed on installer.app it will be a great compliment to the Appstore. 11:09 ericasadun - What is the best ways for developers to commit to releasing both open and AppStore apps? Do you have any advice for them? 11:11 pytey - This is a tricky one, Apple have made some sole distribution clauses in app contracts. It is a shame, I'm guessing people will have to make the choice of big bucks or free of charge. 11:11 pytey - It was amazing to see the revenues generated on the first day of Appstore. 11:12 ericasadun - Do you have any last words for our readers? 11:13 pytey - Thanks for the support, thanks for being patient and thanks for choosing us. We won't let you guys down!
