iPhone 2.1 Update to Bring Better GPS

July 25, 2008

Apple's latest firmware iteration for the iPhone, 2.1, may have more in store than just a few bug fixes and patches. Currently in beta and only available to members of the iPhone Development Program, Gear Live is reporting that v2.1 will feature a much improved GPS integration platform. This new GPS functionality should support the transmission of speed as well as heading (which direction you are traveling), making the prospect of turn-by-turn iPhone navigation a very real, and imminent, possibility. As a reminder, Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of Product Marketing, affirmed just weeks ago that the iPhone's GPS antenna was indeed capable and strong enough to support turn-by-turn directions. Why hadn't it been implemented yet? Well, Joswiak cited "complicated issues," noting it's just a matter of time before Apple delivers. "It will evolve, I think our developers will amaze us.”
