iPhone 3G Experiencing Cracks in Casing

Reports and photos are already emerging from the MacRumors Forums citing hairline cracks in the iPhone 3G casing. The fractures appear to be predominantly appearing on the more expensive white 16GB version. Why is Apple's shiny new wonder-gadget now sporting a plastic housing as opposed to the rigid metal that safeguarded 1st gen iPhones? While Apple might have you believe it's to make the device lighter, sleeker, and 'cooler', the real reason might be that it costs them over $50 less to produce than its 2G predecessor. Such sacrifices to employ cheaper parts are already affecting 3G owners less than 3 weeks after the handset's initial launch.
Apple products are not uninitiated to such problems, as AppleDefects.com shows pictures and stories of MacBook laptops that experienced similar cracks. Check out the MacRumors Forums for additional pictures and information.
