MobileMe debuts tonight!

July 9, 2008

That's right, kids:  sometime between 6PM and 12AM PST tonight, you'll be able to start hollering at all your friends to get off of your cloud!  Undisclosed sources have secured access to the service early, though some features won't work until the system goes live, but that won't stop us from getting you a review right away!  So keep your eyes open, and subscribe to the feed if you haven't already to be notified as soon as the review is available.  If you'd like some more information about what we already know about MobileMe or want some handy links, read on... First off, some logistics:
  • If you already subscribe to .Mac, it's all gravy.  Your subscription will seamlessly transfer, though the system will be offline while they make the switch tomorrow.  And now you have two e-mails for the price of one - you can use your old @mac.com e-mail or the new @me.com, your choice.
  • If you don't subscribe as of yet and want to check it out, you're in luck... Apple is offering a 60 day trial of MobileMe.  To hang onto your cloud after that, you'll need to check out pricing.
  • Either way, MobileMe is iPhone 2.0 compatible only.  So unless you have a developer with a beta 2.0 installed, you won't see any changes tonight.  Still, the new iPhone launches Friday... and it's best to be informed early, no?
Right.  So, what is this service?  Apple would like us to believe that it's "Exchange for the rest of us."  While I'll grant that it's much, much cooler than .Mac, it's not quite Exchange (chalk it up to Stevie J's Reality Distortion Field).  MobileMe's basic goal is to decentralize your services: changes made on your phone get passed on to your computer, and vice versa.  Change your contacts once, it gets passed on everywhere... for certain values of everywhere.  We'll go into more depth in the upcoming review, but suffice to say not all of Exchange's services made it into MobileMe. We'll also be reviewing the new webapps launching with MobileMe, designed to control your photos, calendar, and mail from anywhere.  Stay tuned, you don't want to miss out...
