Review: Recorder

July 21, 2008
Overview If you want to re-live that boring business meeting, unbearable college class or fun-filled honey-do list again and again and again, boy do I have the application for you. Actually, if you're looking for a super useful, insanely simple to use utility that'll cost you less than a buck, say hello to Recorder.

Functionality

Recorder functions exactly how you'd expect a program named Recorder to function; it records. Sound, specifically. It acts as a digital recorder, with the mouthpiece of the phone serving as the microphone. Enter the program, press the big red record button, and procede to capture sound. You can record for as little or as long as you'd like, and when you're done, just press the record button again. The audio track will go right to the main screen, identified as "Memo X", i.e. whichever number is next.

Review

Simple, and to the point, Recorder does what it says it will, but unfortunately, not much else. It's great if you're just trying to take notes (and you're like me and are allergic to pen and paper), are doing an interview, or making a reminder for yourself.

However, the sound source has to be pretty close to the microphone to be captured, as would be expected in a phone-based application. Also, as of now you cannot upload the files onto your computer, though that should be coming in a later version.

Summary

Useful, but falls short of being a terrific tool. A good first-gen application, and hopefully something that will be built on. Future requests: uploading files to iTunes, as well as emailing files capabilities.
