Last.fm v2.0 | Published by Last.fm, Ltd. | Via App Store | Free | Released: 9-29-08

Overview

Last.fm was reviewed positively here at AppleiPhoneApps back in July. It got a whopping 4.5 out of 5 stars. The new 2.0 version released at the end of September simply increases the merit of this music-lover's app to a must-have. With 2.0, there is a totally new design interface, quicker buffering, tagging and individualized features that will may have you dancing like the original iPod commercials, and maybe possibly putting Pandora aside.

What's New In This Version

Little has changed as far as the basic functionality of the app. The expression "the devil is in the details" holds true for this new version. The good folks at Last.fm have done a total redesign of the GUI (graphical user interface) which presents even a starting user with a great first experience in a world of music that might be a little overwhelming. One of the new features is the calendar, which helps you track down when your favorite bands will be performing in your area. As I was listening to Foreigner, I noticed a banner on the top right which said "On Tour" and tapping on it brought up a nice calendar with highlighted dates. Tapping any of these shows you the dates and locations for your upcoming concert.

Also included in the new version is the ability to tag your music from the app. This was previously available only on the website version. I also liked the new Similar Artists button.

Finally, there's easy ways to share and communicate with your friends on Last.fm. You simply tap on a song's interactive bar and you can share, tag or add that song to your playlist. When you share a song, you can select from your existing contacts or your Last.fm friends.

Review

I can't think of any updates as significant as this Last.fm upgrade - except perhaps the transition from Facebook 1.0 to 2.0. I use Last.fm regularly, and this version is simply enjoyable. I did not test it with the 1G iPhone, so I don't know if the Edge buffering is still problematic. However, I found that even the WiFi buffering on my 3G to be much more responsive. There was no longer a lengthy delay between songs.

Summary

This update is not just a tweak. It's essentially a much more user-friendly app that now even adds social networking capabilities. If you haven't been using Last.fm before now, I can guarantee you that 10 minutes with this app will have you falling in love with music all over again.
