Canadian Student Finds Way To A Longer Life

December 21, 2008

Sick of your iPhone battery dying after only a few hours, but don't want to spend the extra bucks on a Juice pack? Well soon you might be praising the name Atif Shamim. This PhD student from Carelton University, has discovered a cure for the problem of the life sucking battery. How did he do it?
The invention involves a packaging technique to connect the antenna with the circuits via a wireless connection between a micro-antenna embedded within the circuits on the chip.
Well basically, he turned the energy inefficient device into one that is 12 x's more efficient (that's a lot), there by increasing the battery life. The Canadian student has filed for a patent in both Canada and the U.S. and was awarded by the European Wireless Technology Conference for his discovery. The iPhone isn't the only lucky gadget that this new technology will work on - the BlackBerry can also benefit from this breakthrough, but will this technology actually be implemented? We'll have to wait and see. [via Carelton University]
