Leopard Update - Don't Do It

December 17, 2008
Macintosh computer users should hold off on the latest OS X Leopard update - 10.5.6 - some sources are saying it is pwning the Pwnage jailbreak. Reports say that the update prevents your computer from being able to recognize your iPhone in DFU mode. DFU stands for Device Firmware Upgrade mode. DFU is the mode used when your machine communicates with your iPhone during restores and updates in iTunes, or for other reasons. In DFU mode you can bypass your computer's operating system. For this reason DFU mode is essential to the Pwnage jailbreak, although there have been known problems with the DFU mode and jailbreak before the Leopard update. According to Infinitie Loop, the entire 2008 MacBook collection had troubles with DFU mode. They report a problem with USB kexts - in the 2008 laptops and now all machines with the 10.5.6 upgrade. There have also been reports of the update crashing users operating systems, destroying Bluetooth connections, Airport connections, and a host of other serious issues. Developers are working on a solution, and Infinite Loop cites a potential workaround, but your best bet for now is waiting on the Leopard update -- especially if you have a an unlocked iPhone or iPod Touch.
