Review: iTalk Recorder Premium

December 18, 2008
Overview iTalk Recorder Premium is a voice recorder that you can use to record notes, conversations, or random thoughts of yours. It stores them on your phone then allows you to transfer them to your computer as high quality AIFF files. All you need is to download iTalk Sync and have a Wi-Fi connection. (Please be advised that this app does NOT record phone conversations. I’ve read that some people were under that impression and were very disappointed.)

Features

  • Quality Levels
You can choose from three different levels, Good, Better and Best. The higher the quality, the larger the file size. There is a slight difference in quality, but it's not that noticeable (at least not to my concert-riddled ears).
  • Easy Control
You can easily pause and resume recordings with the touch of a button. Literally! Starting a new recording is just as easy. One giant button starts and stops it. Very nice.
  • Text Notes
You can add old-fashioned typed notes to your recordings. This way, if there’s some more information you forgot to add, or if you need help remembering what you were talking about - you can spell it out.
  • Easy Syncing
To transfer the files to your computer, you first have to download a program from www.italksync.com. When you open that program on your computer, it searches for phones that are currently using iTalk, and presents you a list. Once you choose the phone, your phone will prompt you to allow the computer to sync. Then you simply drag and drop the files.

Breakdown

The Good: As far as voice recorders go, this one is nice. It works well and it’s easy to use. I like the easy layout. All your recordings are lined up nicely. Easy to find, easy to manage.

The syncing is easy. While a similar application, VoiceNotes, requires you to type in some information to the computer to sync your phone, iTalk finds your phone for you. I also had a hard time syncing VoiceNotes to my computer, even though I tried typing what it told me to. So it’s safe to say that iTalk is the superior product of the two. (It should be noted that I was transferring to a Mac. All of you Windows users will have to try it for yourselves.) The recordings sound good. Not amazing, but good. For my intents and purposes, they sound just fine. If I were trying to record something that I wanted to sound perfect- I probably wouldn’t be using my iPhone. The Bad: I tried to record some music that I was playing to see what it sounded like, and the quality didn’t blow me away. I could tell some frequencies were missing, but that’s not really a good way to pirate music anyways. The real test will come next time I’m at a concert. Then we’ll see how my Radiohead recordings come out. Shhh… don’t tell anyone though. I’m not sure if that’s legal. Other than that, I really didn’t have any issues or complaints with it. It does what it says it will do, and it looks good doing it.

Verdict

If you’re looking for a voice recorder that works well and is easy to use, this app is for you. In my opinion, it works better than VoiceNotes. (And it looks better too.) If you’re hesitant to spend the 4.99, you can always download the free version of iTalk- you’ll just have to put up with some ads here and there. But don’t worry. You’re not required to record any messages detailing your love for Taco Bell. Unless that’s your thing…
