Review: jfControl (Remote)

December 24, 2008
Overview jfControl Remote is exactly what it sounds like it is. You can control several programs on your computer with your iPhone. (Sorry Windows users, it’s currently only a Mac supported app). Just be sure you have a WiFi connection.

Features
  • The Controls
The remote has several custom layouts designed for use for ITunes, DVD, Finder, Quicktime, Front Row and Keynote. There’s also a copy/paste page, and a numberpad. The DVD layout has chapter numbers included, though they’re pretty small.

  • Easy Configuration
Simply download the jfcontrol server from their website, and your phone will automatically find the computer running the program. As soon as it’s connected, you’re in control.

Breakdown The Good: It works. It doesn’t matter what layout you’re on, the controls will probably still work on those programs. The layouts simply make it a little easy for those particular programs. The configuration was a breeze. I didn’t have to enter an IP address or search for a computer. I love when things do all the work for me. (I swear I’m not lazy. I just don’t like doin’ stuff.) The Bad: This app doesn’t come with any instructions. If you’re not sure what a particular button does, the only way you’ll find out is to push it. Ah, the old trial and error method. I ended up opening a lot of windows that I wasn’t trying to. And that wouldn’t be such a bad thing if… the CLOSE BUTTON WOULD WORK! But it didn’t. And that’s kind of frustrating. Aesthetically, the app isn’t very pleasing. It’s very plain. Very boring. I’m glad most of the buttons are a decent size. I just wish it looked better. It’d be nice to have a more advanced iTunes remote, (like the aptly titled Remote app). I’d like to be able to choose a playlist. This is by no means a dealbreaker, but it would have made me like this more. Verdict If you’re desperately in need of a remote for your computer, you should probably get this app. I have a feeling it will only get better with updates. (I hope. I mean, Hell, I don’t know.) There’s also a free version that only features one layout. That layout has the most important buttons: volume, play, pause, next, last and sleep. But I won’t give this a rave review until they get that close button working… because I don’t want to have to get up. That’s the whole point of having a remote, isn’t it?
