Review: Word Warp

December 11, 2008
Overview Word Warp is an anagram game. (If you need a dictionary to look up “anagram” this might not be the game for you.) You’re given six letters and from them you’re supposed to find words. Simple as that. But it’s not simple. You’re going to have to use your noggin.

Features

Word Warp is super easy to play. When you start a new game, you have two minutes to find as many words as you can. Of course, if you’re like me, you’ll change the game time to something a little more reasonable. You can set it up for up to 30 minutes, or just turn the timer off if you can’t handle the pressure of the ticking clock. You’ll be given six letters that you must use to make 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words out of. When you press a letter, it appears in the first box. Then choose a couple more and when you’ve got one - hit “Got It.” If the letters form a “real” word, that word will appear in the list above the puzzle. Keep in mind - the list is in alphabetical order. If you’re having trouble figuring out a word, you can narrow it down knowing that it comes before or after the other words you’ve already found. If you’re stuck, you can hit “Warp,” which magically rearranges the letters. This comes in handy if you need a new perspective. Sometimes words will just pop out that you hadn’t seen before. (And sometimes, it spells a word or two when warping- sweet!) Also, if your puzzle has an “s” in it, remember to put it at the end of words, because plural words count too. Now, if you’re thinking, “well, duh,” Hey! I’m just trying to be helpful.

The game ends when either the time runs out, when you find all the words, or when you raise the white flag of defeat select “End.” As long as you’ve found a six letter word, you can advance to the next level. If not, start over and try again.

Breakdown

The Good:

Since this is my first review, I decided to start out with an app that I absolutely love. (Is it too obvious?) I love puzzle/word games and I’ve been hooked on this one since the day I downloaded it. My mom and I used to play a similar game when I was growing up. It was on paper though- because technology didn’t exist back then. The fact is, it's a fun game.

The graphics are fine. It’s not something that really needs to blow me away. I can read the letters and I can see my score. That’s all that really matters. I know some people have complained that the letters you touch are too small. But they’re not. They’re even larger than the text/e-mail keyboard, you big babies.

The Bad:

My only complaint about the game is how it makes me feel stupid. At the end of the game, it shows you the words you've failed to find. And I always miss an easy one, like “the.” The?! The definite article?! The word I’ve typed more times than my own name?! How can I possibly miss that word?! But that’s my problem, not the game’s... and I’m dealing with it.

I did come across a couple glitches. When I beat a game, my score will increase on it’s own and it won’t stop until I hit “Next Level.” That’s kind of weird. (But if you’re into padding your high score, you cheater, then you’ll love it.) Also sometimes the clock will run even while it’s paused. That’s also kind of weird. Maybe that’s the game’s way of making up for giving out all those free points. Regardless, it doesn't take away from the experience of the game.

Verdict

If you like word games, then you will enjoy Word Warp. It’s a great game to play if you’ve got a few minutes to kill- like waiting outside a fitting room; or if you have all day- like working at a boring job! What are you waiting for? It’s a buck! And there's a free version with ads! You have no excuses! Go get it! Now!
