AT&T Lowers Unlimited Data And Messaging Price

January 26, 2009

It's always a positive thing to see companies competing with each other in product pricing even if we don't directly benefit from it, at least not yet. As of yesterday, AT&T has dropped its unlimited data and messaging plan from $35.00 to the now low price of $30.00. This is most likely a move to keep pace with Verizon's pricing options. AT&T has also renamed all of their additional plan options to be more concise instead of using the usual MEdia Net branding. For example, if you want the unlimited data option, the package is simply called "Data Unlimited." The problem is that these new pricing options don't apply to RIM or Apple phones. Customers will still have to pay the usual $30.00 for the unlimited data plan and at least $5.00 for limited texting. Smartphones obviously use more data than regular cellular phones so this really comes as no surprise. Both Apple and AT&T could probably benefit from lowering the data and messaging prices back to a range near the original iPhone's $20.00 but at this point neither company probably sees a reason to considering that iPhone sales numbers have been quite astounding.
