Next Generation iPhone Evidence In Firmware

January 30, 2009
An iPhone hardware upgrade is inevitable, we all know this. The question is what will the upgrade contain? Phil Schiller has previously stated that the iPhone's usual upgrade cycle occurs in the month of June so even though it is only January, we can still speculate. MacRumors has uncovered a possible confirmation of an iPhone revision in the recently released 2.2.1 firmware update. The current iPhone 3G carries the model number label of "iPhone1,2" while the original iPhone is "iPhone1,1". A different iPhone model number has surfaced in the new firmware update labeled as "iPhone2,1". These numbers usually indicate major hardware revisions that are more than simple storage upgrades. The iPod touch has followed these rules as well. The original iPod touch is labeled "iPod1,1" while the new revision has been labeled "iPod2,1". The evidence is starting to mount, isn't it? There have also been reports from developers whose ads have received hits from this new iPhone label. PinchMedia has reportedly received multiple unique ad hits from an iPhone with the "iPhone2,1" label. The new iPhone has been rumored to support multi-core CPU's and multi-core GPU's. This would explain why the label would jump from "iPhone1,2" to "iPhone2,1" because this would be a considered a major hardware revision. Only time will tell what the month of June may bring but at least we have rumors to keep us busy.
