Review: Star Wars Sound Board

January 1, 2009
Overview The Star Wars Sound Board is an app featuring 16 sounds, (eight quotes, eight sound effects) from the Star Wars movies. (Don’t worry, there’s only one quote from the new trilogy, and it’s just Ewan McGregor wishing the force to be with you. Relax, there’s no Jar Jar.) These are the real recordings, not some recreation. The real deal. Simply push the image that corresponds with the sound you want to hear and presto- there’s your geeky sound!

  • 16 Fun Star Wars Sounds
Here's what you can expect to get for your dollar. Quotes: C-3P0, "We're doomed." Obi-Wan Kenobi, (Ewan McGregor) "May the Force be with you." Obi-Wan Kenobi, (Alec Guiness) "These aren't the droids you're looking for." Obi-Wan Kenobi, (Alec Guiness) "Remember, the Force will be with you, always." Leia, "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope." Darth Vader, "Don't make me destroy you." Darth Vader, "I am your father." Yoda, "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose." SFX: Chewbacca's growl. Jabba the Hut's laugh. R2-D2's beeping. Darth Vader's breathing. Yoda's laughing. Lightsaber. Tie Fighter. Blaster.

Breakdown The Good: It’s Star Wars. So, it’s automatically awesome. And it’s the “real” Star Wars, not that recent crap they tried to pass off as part of the same story. (How the hell can you make a new trilogy and skip over the most interesting part of that era, the Clone Wars?! It was just a bunch of pointless exposition.) It’s like one of those picture books for kids- push the face of the person or animal that’s supposed to speak, and it happens. The voices and SFX sound really good. (Too bad they didn’t have part of the theme song as an option.) You can play the sounds on top of each other. You can’t really understand what’s happening, but it’s still kind of funny because it sounds like your phone is having a seizure. And seizures are pretty funny. This is a good app to find out which strangers are Star Wars fans. Let's say you're hanging out in line at a bank. Play a sound/quote and wait a second for someone else to respond with a Star Wars quote of their own. It happens. Then for a moment, you've connected with a complete stranger... in the dorkiest of ways. The Bad: I want more!!!!! Where’s Han Solo's “Who’s scruffy-looking?” Where’s the random stormtrooper on Tatoonie's “Look sir, droids!” Where’s Luke Skywalker's “But I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters…” Where’s Boba Fett's “He’s no good to me dead.” I could go on and on with the famous and obscure lines that fans are very familiar with, but I don’t need to. I hope an update will come along and they’ll include a couple more pages of sounds so we can get a few more of our favorites in there. Verdict This isn’t trying to be anything it’s not. I would never, ever call this a useful app, but it can be fun and cute- especially for Star Wars nerds. (And I’ve heard that there are a few of them in the world.) Don’t get me wrong; it’s dumb and sort of pointless. If you’re not a Star Wars fan, don’t bother. But if you love Star Wars, then you will enjoy this… because it’s awesome.
