Review: Touch Physics

January 21, 2009
Overview Touch Physics is a game that simply requires you to move a purple circle across a playing field to a yellow star. That’s it. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, there are obstacles in your way. And in order to move that circle, you have to draw shapes to push or guide it. Sometimes you’ll have to draw and set up a ramp, other times you may need to build a catapult to launch your circle to a higher ground. If that sounds like your cup of tea… then you’re going to love this game.

Features

  • 30 Unique Levels!
Every level features a little different challenge. Sometimes you have to cross an open void- other times you have to get your circle up to the top of the screen. There are even a couple “invisible” levels, where obstacles can’t be seen. You have to find the route to the star through trial and error. Don’t be fooled by the first few levels - they do get harder.
  • Bring The Pieces To Life!
You draw a shape on the screen- (a line, circle, triangle, square, whatever) and it becomes a crayon drawing that falls into the environment. Your shapes are used to move the circle- or create a bridge/catapult of some sort.

  • Be A Master Of Physics!
Besides having to take into account actual physics when playing the game (as in a large circle will weigh more and move larger objects as compared to a smaller circle.), you can also adjust the gravity, friction and elasticity levels. Doing so gives the game a whole new feeling, since objects will be reacting a lot differently than before. (I actually prefer the initial settings, to be quite honest. I'm not a fan of nuttiness.)

Breakdown

The Good: This game is FUN. On Christmas eve, I showed it to my cousins. I didn’t see my iPhone for over an hour. All of my cousins were passing it around, trying to beat the hard levels. When I finally did get it back- my battery was at 10%. They enjoyed it. A lot. And I’ve enjoyed it too. I like the fact that there is no "one way" to beat a level.

I love the look of this game. It looks kind of poorly designed- but that’s part of the design- as if it were drawn with crayons on different paper backgrounds. All very cool. I dig the funky guitar music- but after awhile it gets a little repetitive, since it’s the same song over and over again. But fear not, for you can listen to your iTunes songs while you play, if you’d prefer. Or play in silence. It's your life, I'm not telling you how to live it. The Bad: Even though I love this game- it’s not without it’s flaws. I found myself enjoying some levels much more than others. (Not a fan of the “invisible” levels.) I’d like to go back and replay some levels- but to do that I’d have to start over and play from the beginning. It would be nice to be able to select a level to play- like once it’s unlocked or something. Sometimes what you’re drawing doesn’t come out exactly like what ends up falling into the game. This could be one of those faults I should be placing on my “big, dumb fingers.” Oh well. I’m also not a very big fan of the “shake to reset” feature. Sometimes, if you make a quick movement with your phone- yippee! The level restarts! And you were so close to the end... That can be upsetting.

Verdict

This game is only 99 cents right now. What are you waiting for? Go get it! Go! This game is at LEAST one dollar and 99 cents worth of fun! Think about it! You're getting like a dollar's worth of fun for free! You will be entertained for at least a few hours. What would you rather do with your dollar? Download a Justin Timberlake song? No, don’t. Get this game. You won’t regret it… and if you do regret it, take comfort in the fact that it was only a dollar.
