Apple's Devices Lead Mobile Ad Market

February 16, 2009
It's not surprising news but it is good news nonetheless. Apple's iPhone leads all smartphones in the mobile ad market with a 51 percent share of all ad requests. According to AdMob, a firm that tracks ad requests from more than 6,000 published sites, the iPhone and iPod touch hold the top two positions in ads served. Of course this isn't actual market share numbers, it's just ad requests, but the figures still give us an idea on how often users surf the web with their mobile devices. When combined, 29 percent of ad requests from mobile devices in the U.S. come from the iPhone and iPod touch. The iPhone contributes 17 percent while the iPod touch has 12 percent. This is overall ad requests, not specifically for smartphones. Worldwide, the iPhone and iPod touch still hold the top two spots overall with the iPhone contributing 11 percent and the iPod touch about 7 percent. The iPhone itself had 32 percent of the ad requests among smartphones worldwide. In comparison, Nokia as a company with its various models of smartphones had 43 percent of the ad requests while various RIM models accounted for 9 percent. It's also worth noting that AdMob only serves ads to sites geared toward mobile devices so these numbers may even be higher than what the statistics show. [via ArsTechnica]
