It is not very often that we get to write about gaming news. If we reported on every game being announced or released for the iPhone it would consume our every waking moment, but when a game that was originally supposed to cost $9.99 is free, it then becomes something to write about.
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords is now somewhat of a classic title. The original was released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP with great reviews. The game consists of RPG elements combined with simple match-three style puzzles which creates an entertaining mix of gameplay.
It was announced that Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords would be ported to the iPhone as a trilogy. The first two chapters would be the original game while the third chapter is said to be the official expansion.
When the first chapter was released in December 2008 for the price of $9.99, gamers became concerned that it would end up costing $30.00 to own all three chapters. The original game only costs $20.00 for the DS and PSP while the Xbox Live Arcade version only costs $10.00.
To add fuel to the fire, the port was extremely rushed, containing blurry and tiny text which was illegible for most. Gamers were upset that this classic was so poorly done in an alleged attempt to profit quickly from the App Store's success.
Transgaming, the developers of Puzzle Quest for the iPhone, have done their best to remedy the problem, updating the game over the past two months with all types of performance and graphics fixes. They have now officially sweetened the pot.
Transgaming has a free version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords in the works, set for release sometime next week. It will allow players to get a taste of this extremely addictive game, but that's not all.
Gamers who purchased the first chapter of Puzzle Quest will receive the second chapter as a free update. The second chapter is set for release within the next two weeks and will provide players with another 20+ hours of gameplay. That puts Puzzle Quest for the iPhone on par with the rest of the systems.
This just goes to show you that some companies do care about their fans, or at least profits. Transgaming understood they had made mistakes with the port and have tried to win the support of fans of Puzzle Quest back.
I highly recommend checking out the free version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords when it is released. Puzzle Quest is one of the few games at the App Store that has literally 20+ hours of enjoyment packed into a tiny package.
