Review: DinoColor

February 11, 2009
Overview Dinocolor is a coloring book of dinosaurs for your iPhone. Yeah, that’s pretty much it. You choose a dinosaur, then choose a crayon color then… you color the dinosaur. Kind of like how you would in real life. But this is more like… futuristic n stuff.

Features

  • 10 Dinosaurs To Color!
All your favorites are here, like tyrannosaurus rex, stegosaurus, pteranodon, triceratops and the oddball ankylosaurus. Jurassic Park fans may be disappointed to learn that the velociraptor is nowhere to be seen… much like a real raptor… lurking in the foliage… waiting to strike.
  • 48 Crayons!
Remember when you were a kid and your mom would only buy you the 16 pack of Crayola crayons? And remember how jealous you were of the spoiled kid with the big 64 crayon box? Well, there’s 48 colors to choose from here. No sparkles or fluorescent though…

  • Dino Facts and Sounds!
Every dinosaur page has a sound that you can play by pushing a little button in the upper right corner. It’s kind of neat, I guess. My coloring books never roared at me. There’s also a button that will flip the drawing to a fact page so you can learn all about the dinosaur you’re poorly coloring.

Breakdown

The Good: My first reaction was a feeling of nostalgia. I loved coloring books and I loved dinosaurs. We’ve already established that. But here we are talking about it again. So at first I was pleasantly pleased. But that feeling quickly turned to disappointment, which I’ll explain shortly.

First, another good thing: Godzilla’s roar is in the app. I also grew up loving Godzilla. Godzilla 85 was awesome. Still is. If you want to hear the roar, it’s under the parasaurolophus dinosaur. The Bad: Okay, so my problems are many. Only 10 dinosaurs to choose from?! But there’s 48 colors to choose? Something’s not right here. They had better be planning on adding some in an update. Because seriously… 10?! You know what else bothers me? The color tool is more like a paint bucket, so when you touch a part of the dinosaur, everything in that section becomes that color. I want more freedom in coloring! I want to make it look like my old dinosaur coloring books looked like: a bunch of cruddy scribbles that are outside the lines. Is that too much to ask for? A paint bucket option would be nice though. Because if I didn’t want to fill in the entire sky…

Verdict

Unfortunately, there really isn’t much to this app, but the dinosaur loving kids will probably really enjoy it. If you don’t have kids and you don’t really think you’re going to want to color them, then you’ll have no use for this app. Move along… move along… but if you’ve got a little one who’s really into these prehistoric beasts… you might want to check it out. But I’d wait for a sale. This isn’t worth more than 99 cents.
