Turn-By-Turn Navigation Already Available

February 19, 2009
Remember how we all have been complaining about the lack of turn-by-turn GPS navigation for non-jailbroken iPhones? It looks like it already exists and has been available for over a week. XRoad Co. had released an application titled G-Map months ago. In theory, the application seemed like a great idea. XRoad Co. made an East and a West version of the application, separately priced at $19.99. Some may consider that a small price to pay for such a useful application. One of the more exciting features is that the application doesn't require a wireless connection. G-Map stores the map data on the device itself so there is no need to download it while driving. The trade-off is the application is fairly large in size, somewhere around 800-900MB. When it was initially released, most users voiced extreme displeasure because the application simply didn't work. For that reason, the application didn't even make a blip on our radar. The application received a version 1.2 update on February 6th that included tons of bug fixes and one very important feature, turn-by-turn GPS navigation. The only problem is, one other very important feature remains absent from the most recent update, voice navigation. XRoad Co. attributes this to Apple's silly little rules. Due to the lack of voice navigation the company itself doesn't recommend to use the application while driving. So there you have it folks, turn-by-turn GPS navigation does exist for the iPhone for most major U.S. metropolitan areas and soon to be Europe. Now, if we could just get voice navigation we wouldn't have to pull over ever second to check our map. [via MacRumors]
