Turn-By-Turn Navigation For Jailbroken iPhones

February 12, 2009
iPhone users have been clamoring for a legitimate turn-by-turn navigation application since the launch of the App Store. That day still hasn't arrived so users must look to the jailbreak community for answers. This just may be another reason for iPhone users to finally jailbreak their devices. A company named XWaves has created software that comes as close to the current commercial GPS solutions available as possible. The software, xGPS, has been around for a while but it's the updated version that has gotten people excited. xGPS uses Google Maps to give turn-by-turn directions. The software also allows the maps to be downloaded ahead of time and stored on the iPhone just in case you lose your data connection while driving. It supports an external GPS module as well to give first generation iPhone and iPod touch users the same capabilities. Version 1.2 of the software, currently in a pre-release state, includes new features that make xGPS all the more appealing. The new software will include added compatibility with Google Terrain Maps, wireless syncing of files, night mode and the coveted voice instructions. xGPS isn't quite available yet to the general public but keep an eye on Cydia because it will be available soon. As an added bonus, the software is absolutely free unless you need to purchase the external GPS unit. [via modmyi]
