App Store Reaches 25,000 Applications

March 13, 2009
Apple hasn't felt much like tooting its own horn lately when it comes to the App Store application count. The App Store surpassed 20,000 applications without an official announcement, and it has now flew right by 25,000 applications still without a peep from Apple. That's alright with us, because we don't mind tooting horns one bit. According to the application tracking site AppShopper, the App Store surpassed 25,000 downloadable applications sometime yesterday afternoon. Now, I know we have said before that we are leery of posting these numbers because not all sites have the same totals; some differ in count by more than 1,000 applications. But have no fear, because we have decided to get to the bottom of the count issue. From the information we have gathered, the reasoning behind the count difference is simple. Most sites go by the total number of approved applications. This is a fairly inaccurate counting method due to the fact that some applications are removed well after they have been approved. That's how we came to the conclusion to use AppShopper's "Total available apps" counter as our official gauge. What's the point of announcing how many applications have been approved when all of them aren't available to download? Until Apple officially announces some statistics, we will be counting by total available applications from sites like AppShopper. Don't worry, we have made a note of the day and the count just in case Apple does make an announcement so we can compare statistics so you don't have to. At the current rate of applications being made available, we should be back in about a month announcing the App Store's 30,000 application milestone. Until then, keep on downloading.
