Imagination Technologies has released further details for their first multi-core graphics chip called POWERVR SGX543MP. These are the graphics chips that have been rumored to be a part of the next generation iPhone hardware.
The chips are being delivered to customers in two-core and 16-core variants. The best part about the chips, other than the fact that they will be uber-powerful, is that the multi-core support will be transparent to developers, simply meaning no extra programming will be required to harness that extra power. The chips hardware is designed to manage all data accordingly to best utilize the cores.
Apple uses Imagination Technologies' POWERVR MBX in the current generation iPhone while also owning a 3.6 percent stake in the company. The timing couldn't be any better considering Apple will be launching the new iPhone OS 3.0 this summer to the general public which would give them enough time to mass produce iPhones with these chips embedded. Since the multi-core support will be transparent to developers, there would be no need for Apple to let anyone in on the secret.
