iPhone Dominates Mobile Web Use

March 2, 2009
Net Applications has issued their February results for mobile web use and they are heavily in favor of Apple's iPhone. The iPhone holds a 66.61 percent overall share of total mobile web use, which is about nine times more than Windows Mobile, the next closest competitor. The results are calculated by taking browser data from more than 160 million monthly visits to websites operated by Net Applications clients. The calculations may be skewed a bit in the iPhone's favor because Net Applications only takes into account mobile devices that are able to render HTML and Javascript:
“Our mobile share methodology measures share for browser capable mobile devices. This means the mobile device must be able to render HTML pages and javascript. Visits to WAP pages are not included.”
This would explain why RIM's BlackBerry devices aren't even listed on the chart. Most of RIM's devices use WAP, which is a simple way for mobile devices to display content. Worth noting is the fact that the Android platform is right behind Windows Mobile and actually tied with Nokia's Symbian platform. Android has only been around for about five months so this is quite a feat. This new data basically confirms what we already knew, Apple's iPhone simply dominates mobile web use. We reported similar data last month from AdMob's ad request research. AdMob's totals were a tad lower with only 51 percent of total ad requests, but once again, we have to take into account that Net Applications didn't use WAP results. [via Fortune]
