Survey Says Young Japanese Women Like Apple's Designs

March 6, 2009
The results from a survey of 1,102 Japanese women ages 20 to 26 shows that Apple ranks near the top in product design. The survey, sponsored by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization and conducted by goo Research, asked young women from around Japan questions regarding what companies created the most well-designed products and what products they felt were the most well-designed. Apple placed first in good design among items owned and previously owned, first in never owned and second in overall top designed brands. Apple's series of iPods crushed the competition in the products owned category, receiving more than three times more votes than the next closest product which was Sharp's brand of mobile phones. The iPhone didn't even place on the owned products list because as we all know, the Japanese aren't buying the iPhone. The iPhone did, however, take second place in the "best design amongst products never owned" category, right behind the iPod series. Apple, as a company, easily took first place in the cumulative votes for both owned and never owned products, beating out the likes of Toyota, Nissan, Sharp, Nintendo and even Sony. Finally, in the "what brand do you feel has superior design" category, Apple placed second only to Sony. The sample size was relatively small, but it gives us an idea what young Japanese women like. This is supposedly a big deal because according to the survey, Japanese women in their early 20s are the first ones to adapt to new trends. [via AppleInsider]
