Apple Begins The Countdown To 1 Billion App Downloads

Today the countdown to one billion App Store app downloads has begun on Apple's homepage, Apple.com. In celebration of this upcoming feat, they're holding a contest in which you have a chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. To enter, all you have to do is download any app from the App Store.

One billion downloads in less than a year of operation for the App Store is quite an achievement and certainly sets the bar extremely high for competing app stores like the Android Market and Palm's upcoming Pre App Store. With the release of iPhone OS 3.0 on the horizon, and the tons of new features it's going to provide, one has to wonder what number of downloads we'll be at this time next year.
