Are Sweaty Workouts Damaging iPhones?

April 9, 2009
ht3302_06 A couple of people in Houston, TX claim that their iPhones were damaged after working out at the gym from sweat seeping into the bottom of the iPhone down near the dock connector, according to CNet. While most cell phone moisture sensors are located under the battery or somewhere else within the phone, that's not the case with the iPhone as you can see in the picture. It's not clear whether or not Apple replaced the damaged iPhones in Houston or if those people were forced to purchase new ones. One may assume that Apple won't be making any exception for these people as they've made it clear in this knowledge base article that water-damage is not covered under warranty. The solution to preventing this from happening to your iPhone is a simple one; protect it with a case. Or, as an alternative, purchase a more gym-friendly iPod shuffle. I personally have never actually used my iPhone without the protection of a case (and a screen protector) and while I'm not exactly a gym rat, don't think I would risk loosing control and dropping my iPhone while working out, so I'd use my iPod shuffle. Has the problem of the sweaty iPhone or iPod Touch happened to you? What's been your experience in trying to get a replacement from Apple? And remember, when working out, always make sure your valuables wear protection.
