Survey Shows Nearly Every Teen Owns An iPod, Not iPhone
April 8, 2009
Piper Jaffray's 17th bi-annual teen survey results are in, indicating that teens love their iPods, can't afford iPhones, and still download music illegally in droves.
This is the eighth year Piper Jaffray has conducted the survey. They visit several high schools around the country and poll students on an assortment of topics. This year, 600 students participated. The average age of the students polled was 16.3 years old with 54 percent being male students and 46 percent being female.
So what do the results indicate? Well it seems that nearly every teenager owns and iPod, but I probably could have told you that. Of the 600 teens polled, 92 percent said they owned a digital media player and of that 92 percent, 86 percent reported owning an iPod. The results do however indicate that the market is extremely saturated already. Only 19 percent of the teens said they planned to purchase a new digital media player in the next year.
As for iTunes, 97 percent of the teens who purchased their music legally online said their store of choice was the iTunes Store. The results also indicate that 60 percent of the students said they are still using illegal peer-to-peer file sharing to acquire their music.
Surprisingly, the iPhone is also included in Piper Jaffray's survey. Of the teens polled in the survey, 8 percent said they owned an iPhone while 16 percent said the intend on purchasing one in the next six months. The results are fairly impressive considering it's hard to believe many teenagers have the funds, or a valid reason to purchase a smartphone. The number of teenagers who intend on purchasing an iPhone actually declined from 22 percent six months ago. Piper Jaffray indicates that this is because of AT&T's rate plans, which would be a logical conclusion.
As always, teenagers seem to be a very important piece of the sales puzzle, especially electronics.
