More Indications AT&T May Lower Data Plan Costs
May 18, 2009

The exclusive U.S. iPhone service provider is considering cutting the price of its monthly service package or offering a range of lower-priced plans, say people with knowledge of the company's thinking. One plan that could be introduced as early as late May would include limited data access at a $10 monthly reduction, the people say. This rumor follows one from earlier this month by TheStreet that suggested AT&T was considering lowering the basic service plan price for the iPhone from $69 per month to $59. Also, earlier in the year a report from Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu suggested more of the same, saying AT&T was considering offering tiered data plans for the iPhone. None of these rumblings are supported by any factual evidence, they are simply rumors. It would be a logical step for AT&T to make their iPhone plans cheaper to bring in more fence-sitters considering the competition has heated up and iPhone sales are slowing down, but after a recent breakdown by The Wall Street Journal that suggested AT&T couldn't afford to do such a thing, we are not so sure. This most recent rumor, however, makes the most sense because AT&T wouldn't necessarily be losing much by offering a limited but lower-priced plan. They could attract more customers without hurting their profit margins due to the data limits. Would any of you current iPhone users on AT&T's network consider downgrading your data plan to a limited version to save up to $10 a month?
