It seems as if Apple is still trying to unload whatever stock they have left of the iPhone 3G, because they are now officially offering the device through their online store, shipped straight to your door.
In the past, Apple required all customers to purchase an iPhone 3G through their retail stores, AT&T's retail stores, or through AT&T's online store, at least in the U.S.
This new method is only valid for customers who are new to AT&T, while all existing AT&T customers must still pick up their phones at a local Apple retail store if ordered through their online store. When you go to purchase an iPhone 3G through Apple's online store, you must enter your billing address to allow a credit check, select a rate plan, and finally you can have it shipped to your door for free. You can also choose to pick it up at a retail store if you feel like getting out of the house.
Still, with all of the rumors of a next-gen iPhone coming soon, it's hard to see this offer enticing many new customers.
