Two New Lode Runner Games Hit The App Store On The Same Day
May 27, 2009
Get ready to hop into your way back machine because the App Store just received the Lode Runner treatment. The classic 1983 Apple II game is now available in the App Store, and the best part is, there are two different versions to choose from.
The App Store has been void of any Lode Runner remakes or knockoffs for quite some time, but for whatever reason, two separate developers decided to release two distinctly different takes on the classic game on the same exact day.
If you haven't ever played Lode Runner before, the game is quite simple and yet somehow extremely addicting. In Lode Runner, you are required to collect all of the gold placed around the level without getting caught by the guards. You can dig holes through the brick by shooting to either side of your character to gain access to certain areas. You can also make the guards fall into these holes to get yourself out of tight jams. Once you have collected all of the gold, you must make your way to the top of the screen to move on to the next level.
iLodeRunner by ARCTAN is virtually an exact replica of the original version released in 1983. The graphics, sound, and gameplay all look and feel the same. The game features all 150 levels from the original Lode Runner along with the ability to change game speeds, high score system, and a level selector. iLodeRunner also features two different control schemes, with one using the accelerometer, and the other using touch-based controls. The developer intends to add a level editor with the next planned update. iLodeRunner is currently available in the App Store for $3.99.
Lode Runner by Meson Networks is more of a remake of the classic game. It features updated graphics and characters, but it still delivers that retro feeling. The game features 45 levels, a ranking system, and an autosave feature. This version of Lode Runner seems to be a bit buggy yet, at least according to user reviewers, but hopefully the developer remedies the issues rather quickly. Lode Runner is available in the App Store for $1.99.
Both versions deliver that awesome retro feeling, but iLodeRunner would have to be the top choice for all of you old school gamers out there just because it is the original game. We are unable to confirm whether or not either of the games are officially licensed, so if you are set on picking one up, we recommend you do it quickly just in case either version gets pulled from the App Store.
If you do end up giving either one a try, stop back and tell us what you think. Your opinion may just help other Lode Runner fans make their purchasing decision.
Just to make sure we are clear, the above screenshots are from iLodeRunner, while the screenshots below are from Lode Runner.
