Co-founder and current CTO of Id Software, John Carmack, hinted a while back that he was working on a "secret" project.  Apparently the secret just couldn't be kept any longer because Carmack has finally revealed to Macworld what it was that he had been working.  That secret project is Doom Resurrection for the iPhone and iPod touch. Doom Resurrection isn't just another name for the long awaited Doom Classic, this is a completely new effort designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod touch.  The game will be a first-person shooter, of course, and it will use assets originally designed for Doom 3.doomresurrection_screen The game was actually created in cooperation with Escalation Studios, which is the team of developers who created ngmoco's Dr. Awesome and who have also worked on dozens of Id engine driven games. Tom Mustaine, a member of Escalation Studios, had this to say about the development of the game:
“We sat down about seven or eight months ago and decided we wanted to bring a Doom experience to the iPhone that was unique,” said Mustaine. "Getting visuals up and running was a lot easier than we expected,” he said. “It’s a lot more powerful than people give it credit for.” “The game features brand new levels created using Doom 3 content,” said Mustaine
Outside of the unveiling of the project, very little is known about it except that the story runs parallel with the original Doom where you are a space marine who must protect Earth from an invasion of demonic creatures that have traveled through a dimensional rift on Mars. They must have been hard at work because the game is set for release in about "a month or so" but the price has yet to be determined. Also, don't worry about Doom Classic, it is still a work in progress.
