Gameloft has finally taken the wraps off of their GTA-esque iPhone game Gangstar: West Coast Hustle, and simply judging from the first screenshots, this one is definitely one to watch for.
We have already seen a couple iPhone games attempt to use the original top-down GTA formula, specifically Payback and Car Jack Streets, but Gameloft's new game is way more ambitious than any of those titles. Gangstar: West Coast Hustle looks more like it was modeled after the third game in the highly acclaimed GTA series, which was actually the first 3D GTA game.
Gangstar: West Coast Hustle takes place in L.A. where you will be exploring open-ended 3D environments as part of a gang. Like all sandbox-style games, you will be allowed to do nearly anything and everything at your leisure. You will be asked to complete missions to progress through the game, but you can also wander around aimlessly while wreaking havoc as long as you don't get caught by the cops. The game will feature the ability to steal and drive vehicles via on-screen or accelerometer controls, and you will also be able to fight and shoot your enemies with a simple touch of the screen.
Gameloft has stated that the game should be available by "the end of summer." That's pretty much all we know at this point, but it will be interesting to see how large the environments actually are, and how far Gameloft can push Apple's portable devices without making the older ones slow to a crawl. Gameloft has stated that the game will be available for the iPhone and iPod touch, and they didn't list any specific models.
Embedded below is a video demonstration of the game from German site Macmagazin.de.
