Review: Family Guy

July 6, 2009
Overview Watch video clips, play a mini-game, create Stewie pin-ups, and even make your own clips in the video mixer from this official Freakin' Sweet application brought to you by Fox Mobile Entertainment, Inc. Although this application is packed with a lot of content, it doesn't really measure up to what you'd expect. Features The main feature included in this app is the Video Channel page. This is basically a page filled with tons of Family Guy clips that you can watch and share with friends and family. These are only clips and not full episodes, but they do get refreshed on a daily basis. There is also a link to iTunes so you can purchase the episode the clip is referencing too. In the Freakin' Sweet Mixer portion of the app you can create your own Family Guy video mix by dragging clips into the timeline. Once created, name your new mix whatever you'd like and post it up in the application for people to watch and rate. There's a mini-game called Peter Toss where you, well...basically shake your device and send Peter bouncing around the screen. With Stewie pin-up mix and match different Stewie heads and outfits to create an original Stewie pin-up wallpaper for your phone. Lastly, the game includes some Easter Eggs that are hidden throughout the app. Although, after searching the application for over two hours I was still unable to find any? I know there is one in the Peter Toss though. Let me know if you find any. The Breakdown The Good: The video mixer is easily the strongest element in this application. For one, creating your own clip is just plain fun. Especially if you're a big fan of the show. Not only can you create your own, but you can watch and rate the mixed clips of other videos as well. Watching the weird and silly clips that people come up with is really entertaining. It's my favorite part of the application for sure. The app also has a large selection of clips from the show as well. They get updated on a daily basis too. The Bad: There's no full episodes...which isn't freakin' sweet at all. Yeah, there's tons of clips, but no full episodes? Really? I mean it wouldn't be a big deal if the app was free, but since you can stream them for free online why not have them in this application? If anything just one a week? Like the one that aired on Sunday maybe? The quality of the video and audio isn't very good. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. Again, for $1.99 that's disappointing. The Peter Toss and Stewie Pin-ups get pretty boring after about a few minutes too. I was really expecting more out of both of those features and they were just disappointing. The Verdict If you are a huge Family Guy fan then you might like this. However, most of the stuff included in this app can be found on YouTube and the quality is far superior on that, so...what else is there? For me, I was really bored with this. I feel it should be free like almost every other film/television tie-in app. Charging two bucks for this and all you get is bad videos and a pretty lame mini-game? I say stay away on this one.
