Always Getting Beat Down In iPhone Racing Games? Try Using A Steering Wheel
August 7, 2009
If you are one of those people who just can't seem to master holding your iPhone in the air during a racing game while also tilting and steering, there just may be some hope for you after all.
CTA Digital has created a plastic housing that turns your device into a mini steering wheel. It works with the iPhone, iPhone 3GS, first-generation, and second-generation iPod touch. It's an extremely simple device and it resembles those silly Wii remote accessories, but it may actually be useful for a small, select group of people. Probably those of you who don't game while on-the-go, because who would want to lug around a giant plastic steering wheel?
The steering wheel comes with a bunch of different attachments, so just pick the one that fits your specific device. Snap your device into the casing and then snap it into the big plastic steering wheel. That's it. The housing doesn't block the front of the screen, so you are able to press all of the on-screen buttons. The distance between your device and the edge of the steering wheel seems to be quite far, which may cause a hand cramp or two, but that's a small price to pay for racing glory.
The steering wheel will ship with or without the suction cup stand, but I just don't see how useful it could be without the stand. The stand is able to lock down tightly to almost any flat surface, and it features an arm that is able to pivot.
This is a brand new product by CTA Digital, so they haven't priced it yet, but CNet expects the price to be somewhere around $19.99. I would assume that would be the price for the non-suction cup one.
We have included CTA Digital's over-the-top demonstration video below. Give it a watch and tell us if you think it's something you would purchase.
