Sirius XM Introduces Rumored SkyDock Satellite Radio Peripheral For iPhone And iPod Touch

August 26, 2009

Late last week, rumors surfaced that Sirius XM would be releasing an iPhone and iPod touch peripheral at an invitation-only media event in New York that would turn the mobile devices into full-fledged satellite radios.  According to All Things Digital, Sirius XM has officially introduced the rumored device, and although all of the rumored details may not have been spot-on, they sure were close. The SkyDock peripheral uses iPhone OS 3.0's third-party hardware support to transform the iPhone and iPod touch into full-fledged satellite radios, which means that you will get ALL of Sirius XM's channels, including Howard Stern.  SkyDock is designed to run off of a vehicle's cigarette lighter power adapter, which also doubles as the peripherals mount.  SkyDock will retail for $119.99 and should be available sometime this fall. The XM SkyDock App, the companion app that will control the SkyDock, will be available in the App Store free of charge at the same time the peripheral is released.  The app will function as tuner, and will also feature the ability to tag songs for later purchase, game alerts and sports ticker, artist and song alerts, and a stock ticker. Now that the SkyDock is official, what do you think?  Is it worth a purchase?
