In the market for a new iPod Touch? Well Apple just upped the ante big time creating a 64GB version, and even dropping the price of the current 8GB model to $199. But is it enough? It was widely anticipated the iPod Touch would finally get a camera, and some even speculated the version would do video. The camera (and video obviously) did not happen, but let's look at what we did get.
2 all new versions of the iPod Touch were announced today. The entry level 8GB model did not get any updates but saw the price drop to only $199. But for only a hundred bucks more you can quadruple the storage capacity and get an all new 32GB model. Need more space still? For $399 there is now a 64GB iPod Touch. 64GB solid state memory that is as thin as a pencil, now that is impressive.
Before jumping at the lowest price model, it is important to note that along with the increased storage in the other model comes speed. The new 32GB and 64GB iPod Touches are faster, "up to 50% faster" according to Phil Schiller. They also feature OpenGL ES 2.0, which is "great for those next-generation games." A final difference is the 32GB and 64GB models support voice control, while the 8GB version does not.
While the new iPod Touches are definitely a worthy improvement, many Apple enthusiasts are disappointed that the new devices are missing what many considered the killer feature, a video camera. Even the new iPod Nano now features a video camera, so why doesn't the iPod Touch get any recording love? Some have speculated that there were delays in the camera hardware units causing the omission, yet if that is the real reason, how did they make their way into the new Nano?
Could it be that Apple did not want to upgrade the Touch's memory? The iPhone and iPhone 3G did not have the necessary NAND solid-state memory to support the large number of read and writes of video recording? Maybe it was not a delay after all but a cost cutting effort to keep the prices down for the greatest iPod on the planet. This is speculation on our part, but whatever the reason the camera didn't make the iPod Touch models, millions of future iPod Touch owners will surely be disappointed.
