C64 Pulled From The App Store Due To A 'Basic' Workaround
September 8, 2009
Manomio's Commodore 64 emulator for the iPhone and iPod touch hit the App Store over the weekend, which was actually somewhat surprising. The app had been rejected by Apple on at least one occasion, but the developers made enough changes over time to finally get Apple's approval. That approval, however, was short-lived. Apple has decisively pulled Manomio's C64 from the App Store after it was brought to their attention that the BASIC interpreter was still accessible through the app's interface via a simple workaround.
Manomio addressed the issue via an update on their website:
Unfortunately, Apple has pulled the C64 Application from their store as it was discovered by some users that it was possible to enable the Basic program through the interface. We have now fixed the issue and our application has been re-submitted for approval by Apple. We thank you all for your support and fingers crossed we hope to launch again over the next few days.I suppose we can deduce that the BASIC interpreter was one of the reasons the app was initially rejected. If you still have C64 on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can access BASIC by enabling "always show full keyboard," then just start a game and go to the EXTRA keyboard and tap RESET. C64 should be back in the App Store in no time, obviously without a BASIC workaround, for the price of $4.99.
