Flight Control Will Be Landing On Another Platform
Firemint has announcement that their hugely popular line drawing game Flight Control will be landing on the Nintendo DSi, which means it's no longer an iPhone exclusive title.
Firemint’s CEO Robert Murray said “In the past we’ve developed licensed titles for Nintendo’s handhelds, so it’s very exciting to combine our knowledge of the platform with our own original IP. We’re really looking forward to introducing Flight Control to a whole new audience on the DSi!”
Flight Control has been one of the most popular paid games in the App Store, and according to Firemint, is the first iPhone and iPod touch title to have reached more than 1,500,000 copies sold.
Flight Control joins Minigore, Castle of Magic, Fieldrunners, and Hero of Sparta as some of the first iPhone exclusive games to be ported to other major gaming platforms. It's unlikely that we will see games like Flight Control make it to Sony's platform, however, because the Nintendo DSi's stylus control system better mimics the iPhone's unique controls. Just imagine playing a line drawing game on a PSP with dual thumbstick controls. Flight Control is set for release in Nintendo's DSiWare store in Q4 2009.
Now don't get me wrong, I am all for iPhone developers succeeding in other areas, but it's kind of sad to see our once iPhone exclusive titles being ported to other platforms. That little piece of fanboy in me just doesn't want any of this. Imagine if Halo were ported to the PS3, or Gran Tourismo to the 360, or even worse, Mario ported to any system other than Nintendo's. I know that's not a fair comparison considering the legacy each one of those games has, but you get the idea.
One of the major upsides, however, is that these iPhone developers will have new sources of income, which should only mean more money to throw at game development in general.
Flight Control isn't the first and certainly won't be the last game ported to another platform, so I guess I better just get used to it.
