iPod Touch Received A Price Drop Today, But So Did The Software Update

September 9, 2009

Sometimes it just pays to wait, and in this case it pays a lot to wait.  If you were waiting to purchase one of those fancy new iPod touch models with a built-in camera, I mean, faster processor, then you will be happy to know that they have received a considerable price drop.  If you decided against purchasing a new device due to the lack of a camera and you are still sporting an OS version that is older than 3.0, you can also save some money.  The software update that was normally priced at $9.95 is now only $4.95, but is that a good thing or a bad thing? Look at it this way, if you purchased a first generation iPod touch sometime in late 2007, you probably purchased the software update that was released in January 2008 for $19.95.  That update contained quite a few worthy additions, including the Mail, Maps, Stocks, Notes, and Weather apps.  Then, not too long after, 2.0 was released and once again iPod touch owners had to pay the price, only this time it was $9.95.  So, if we do the math, you have now dropped $29.90 on software updates. Fast forward to OS 3.0's release in June of this year.  iPhone OS 3.0 added a bunch of new worthy features, including cut, copy, and paste and Push Notifications.  All of these new features probably were enticing enough to warrant another $9.95 purchase.  That puts our total at $39.85.  Today, iPhone OS 3.1 was released and to our surprise, Apple dropped the software update price to only $4.95.  That means if you were somehow able to wait until today to purchase a software update for your first generation iPod touch, you could have saved $34.90 and received all of the same great features. But of course that's not how technology works.  The longer you wait, the cheaper things get, so there is no reason to get upset about it.  Let's just try and be happy about the new low price, alright?  And, don't forget, all iPod touch models that ship today and after will include iPhone OS 3.1.
